How to keep your hijab on while running

By SABA SG ·

Hijab slipping, flapping or pulling mid-run? Seven practical fixes: the right fit system, hair placement, tying, tucking, earbuds and what to do in the heat.

Few things ruin a run faster than a hijab that slips, flaps or needs fixing every kilometre. These seven fixes solve almost all of it.

1. Use a sports hijab with a real fit system

Everyday hijabs rely on pins or friction, and running's repeated impact loosens both. A sports hijab with a built-in headband and tie-back, like the Lite Sports Hijab, holds at the forehead and tightens at the back.

2. Put your bun low

A low bun or ponytail at the nape gives the hijab something to grip and keeps the back flat. A high bun pushes the fabric up and lets it shift.

3. Tie below the bun, not on top

Bring the tie-back strings under your bun and knot them snugly. Snug, not tight: you should be able to turn your head freely without a headache.

4. Tuck the ends in

Loose ends catch the wind and swing with every stride. Tuck them into a fitted top or sports bra layer. For races, a fitted long-sleeve top keeps everything in place.

5. Add a grippy inner

An inner stops the hijab sliding on your hair. A breathable mesh one, like the AirFlow Tie-back Inner, adds grip without extra heat.

6. Sort your earbuds first

Put wireless earbuds in before the hijab, then smooth the fabric flat over your ears. Adjusting earbuds through fabric mid-run is what usually pulls a hijab loose.

7. Dress for the heat

In hot, humid weather, a hijab that holds sweat gets heavy and starts to drag. Breathable mesh and quick-dry fabric stay light. Run early or in the evening when you can, and see working out in hijab in hot weather.

Do a 10-second test

Before you set off, jog on the spot and shake your head side to side. If anything moves, retie a little firmer. Watch the how-to-wear video to see the full routine.

Common questions

Why does my hijab keep slipping back when I run?

Usually because nothing anchors it at the front. A built-in headband holds the hairline, and a tie at the back stops it sliding.

Which sports hijab shape is best for running?

A close-fitting shape with less loose fabric. On the Lite Sports Hijab, that is the Triangle.

Can I run a race in a sports hijab?

Yes. Pick a fitted top so you can tuck the ends in, pin your bib to the top, not the hijab, and test your full race kit on a training run first.
