Sports hijab guide by activity

Different sports move your head in different ways. Here is how to choose a shape and set it up for each one. The Lite Sports Hijab comes in two shapes: Triangle (180 x 25 x 25 cm, close fit) and Rectangle (180 x 70 cm, more drape and coverage).

Quick picks

Activity Shape Key tip
Running Triangle Tie below the bun, tuck the ends
Gym and weights Triangle or Rectangle Tuck in before bench or floor work
HIIT and classes Triangle Do a test jump before you start
Padel and tennis Triangle Keep the ends tucked so they stay off the racket
Netball and futsal Triangle Snug tie, tuck into your jersey
Hiking Rectangle Extra fabric for sun and coverage
Cycling Triangle Keep it flat under the helmet
Pilates and yoga Triangle Tuck in for inversions and floor work

Running

Running is all repeated impact, so the goal is zero bounce. Tie the strings below your bun and tuck everything into a fitted top. Choose a colour that suits the time of day: lighter shades are nicer in direct sun. More in how to keep your hijab on while running.

Gym, weights and HIIT

Bench presses, burpees and floor work are where loose fabric gets annoying. Tuck the ends in before you start and re-check between sets. If you sweat a lot, rinse the hijab after the session to keep it fresh.

Padel, tennis and badminton

Fast turns and overhead shots mean the fabric needs to stay out of the way of your arm and racket. The Triangle's close fit works best.

Netball, futsal and team sports

Tie snugly and tuck the ends into your jersey. In competitive play, check your league's kit rules: many sports now explicitly allow head coverings (see a short history of the sports hijab). The Lite Sports Hijab has no pins, which is safer for contact.

Hiking and outdoor walks

Long hours outside reward more fabric. The Rectangle gives extra coverage at the neck and chest and shade from the sun. Pack water and take breaks in the shade.

Cycling

The helmet has to sit flat and secure. Wear the Triangle so there is less fabric under the helmet, and check the helmet straps fit correctly over the hijab before you ride.

Pilates and yoga

Inversions and lying on a mat can pull fabric out of place. Tuck the ends into a fitted top and keep the tie low so it is comfortable when you lie back.

Swimming

The Lite Sports Hijab is not swimwear. For the pool or the sea, use a dedicated swim hijab made for chlorine and salt water.
